Deciding which camera to buy as a beginner videographer is only half of the challenge, the other is deciding which lens you should get to go with it. But don’t worry, because we’re here to help make that decision a little bit easier by recommending you 2 lenses you can’t go wrong when starting out.
30mm f/1.8
First off we have the 30mm f/1.8, a controversial choice with a strong reason behind it. Most beginner videography cameras have, what is know as, an APS-C sensor (crop sensor). This means whatever lens you decide to attach to the front of your camera will have a crop value of 1.5x or more. So by doing some basic maths, this 30mm lens will produce a look similar to that of a 50mm lens. And if there’s one thing we can tell you for certain, it’s that 50mm is one of the most loved focal lengths in cinematography. The RRP of 30mm lenses vary between £150 and £300 from most camera manufacturers.
50mm f/1.8
Following on nicely from the 30mm we have the 50mm f/1.8 because, as we have said before, this is a focal length used in some of the greatest motion picture sequences in the world. The 50mm has been coined as the ‘nifty-fifty’ thanks to it’s sharp focus, blurry backgrounds, rich contrast, and low price tag. These lenses retail for a RRP of £100 - £250 from the majority of camera brands. And for the APS-C cameras we spoke about before, these come out with a focal length similar to that of a 80mm lens.
So rather than spending countless hours trying to figure out which lens is best for you but won’t break your bank. Try one of our recommendations instead.
